About Cloud Platforms

Cloud platforms provide computing resources on demand over the internet. Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched in 2006 and pioneered the public cloud. Google Cloud Platform (GCP) appeared in 2008, Microsoft Azure in 2010. Together they hold over 60% of the global cloud services market.

The cloud is used by Netflix (fully on AWS), Spotify (Google Cloud), LinkedIn (Azure), Airbnb (AWS), and Twitter (Google Cloud). Netflix serves 230+ million subscribers with infrastructure entirely in AWS. Spotify stores 100+ petabytes of data in Google Cloud.

Cloud service models: IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) — virtual servers, networks, storage; PaaS (Platform as a Service) — ready platforms for running code; SaaS (Software as a Service) — ready-made applications. Serverless (FaaS) lets you run functions without managing servers.

Cloud advantages: scale in minutes instead of weeks, pay-per-use billing, global presence (data centers worldwide), managed services (databases, queues, ML). Alternatives to the big three: DigitalOcean and Hetzner for simpler projects with transparent pricing.
