About Kotlin Development
Kotlin is a programming language developed by JetBrains (St. Petersburg) and released in 2011. In 2017, Google declared Kotlin the official language for Android development. Since 2019, Kotlin is the preferred language for new Android projects. Kotlin compiles to JVM bytecode and is fully compatible with Java.
Kotlin is used by Google, Pinterest, Uber, Trello, Evernote, Coursera, and Square. According to Google, over 60% of top-1000 apps in the Play Store use Kotlin. Pinterest migrated its Android app to Kotlin and reports a 33% reduction in crashes.
Null-safety is Kotlin's key feature. The compiler distinguishes nullable and non-nullable types, preventing NullPointerException at compile time. Coroutines simplify asynchronous programming — async/await without callback hell.
Jetpack Compose is Google's modern UI framework in Kotlin with a declarative approach. Instead of XML layouts, the interface is described with functions. Kotlin Multiplatform allows sharing business logic between Android, iOS, Desktop, and Web.
