About Docker and Kubernetes
Docker is a containerization platform created by Solomon Hykes in 2013. Containers package an application with all its dependencies into an isolated environment that runs consistently on any server. Unlike virtual machines, containers share the host kernel and start in seconds.
Docker and Kubernetes are used by Google, Spotify, Pinterest, Airbnb, and Capital One. Google runs billions of containers weekly. Spotify migrated hundreds of microservices to Kubernetes. Capital One built its entire infrastructure on containers, reducing deploy time from weeks to hours.
Kubernetes (K8s) is a container orchestration system developed by Google and donated to CNCF in 2014. Kubernetes automatically distributes containers across servers, restarts failed ones, scales under load, and updates without downtime (rolling updates).
Helm simplifies installing applications in Kubernetes via packages (charts). Prometheus and Grafana provide metrics monitoring. ArgoCD implements GitOps — cluster state is synchronized with a Git repository. Istio adds a service mesh for traffic management between services.
