About PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is an open-source object-relational database system developed since 1986. The project began as POSTGRES at the University of California, Berkeley, under Michael Stonebraker. In 1996 it was renamed PostgreSQL with full SQL support.

PostgreSQL is used by Apple, Instagram, Spotify, Reddit, Twitch, and governments worldwide. Instagram stores billions of records in PostgreSQL. Spotify uses it for metadata of 100+ million tracks. Reddit built its entire infrastructure on PostgreSQL.

PostgreSQL supports JSONB for storing JSON documents with indexing, enabling NoSQL-like queries. Built-in full-text search supports many languages. PostGIS turns PostgreSQL into a powerful geospatial system for maps and coordinates.

PostgreSQL is known for strict SQL standard compliance and reliable ACID transactions. It supports window functions, CTEs, and materialized views. TimescaleDB extends PostgreSQL for time-series data. Citus enables distribution across multiple servers.
