About PHP
PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a server-side language created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994. According to W3Techs, PHP powers 77% of all websites with a known server-side language, making it the most widely used language for web development.
PHP powers Facebook, Wikipedia, WordPress.com, Slack, and Mailchimp. WordPress, written in PHP, runs over 40% of all websites on the internet. Facebook was originally built entirely in PHP and still uses it (via HHVM/Hack).
Modern PHP (version 8.x) is vastly different from early versions: JIT compiler, strict typing, attributes, named arguments, and match expressions. PHP 8 performance has improved 2-3x compared to PHP 5.
